Winter pest-proofing is a crucial step in winterizing your home. Adding these steps to your winterizing to-do list will help ensure your property will withstand the effects of winter weather and the bugs and pests that come with it. Even filling the most minor holes/cracks in the foundation can save you a whole season’s worth of unwanted pests!

While insects tend to be more prevalent during the warmer months, it is not uncommon that ants, spiders, and other crawling insects to find their way into your home. Pests often look for a warm place to stay, and your house may look pretty cozy these days…

So how can you prevent tiny unwanted newcomers from overstaying their welcome in your home? Our team at Mosquito Hero has put together a list of tasks for you so that you can winterize your home and keep the bugs away.

Inside of your home:

Do you sometimes notice a chill in your home during the winter? That may be because you have a draft coming in from outside. Not only will a draft make your heating less efficient, but it also means pests can find their way in. Typically, you should be re-caulking your windows every 2 years. If you have small holes near the windows, any type of bug can come in and nest in your home during the night. Spiders are the worst for nesting in the winter!

To help resolve this, go to your local hardware store and pick up caulking and weather strips. Use the caulking to fill in any small holes or cracks around your windows and then place the weather strips along the edges of your front, back, and side doors. Eliminating these common entry points will help to reduce pest invasion over the winter.

Outside of your home:

Cleaning your rain gutters regularly is essential. Allowing leaves and debris to build up has the potential to cause problems such as flooding and water damage inside your home. Since many insects like cockroaches and ants are attracted by moisture, eliminating wet spots from leaky pipes, or spills is essential, or potential flooding is important.

If you have lots of trees, bushes, and shrubbery around your property, trim them or cover them for the winter. Lots of bugs, insects, and animals will hide there, thus increasing the chances that they’ll find their way into your home at night.

Some pests, such as mice, can crawl through a hole the size of a dime! Therefore, it is important to walk around your property and seal up any entrances or potential nests in bushes that will lead to unwanted pests getting in!

I have fogged myself, have had another company spray for mosquitoes in the past, and neither has been especially successful.
