Backyard Mosquito Control: How to Make 2026 Your First Bug-Free Summer

Do the mosquitoes decide when you can or can’t go outside? Do they keep you from going outside completely? If that’s the case, learning how to get rid of mosquitoes in your backyard can be a game-changer and a season-saver.

It’s actually easier than you think! In fact, today we’re going to cover a few backyard mosquito control tips that will help you take your yard back and go outside any time you want!

How Can I Get Rid Of Mosquitoes in My Backyard?

Let’s keep things simple. Mosquitoes are attracted to four things:

  1. Stagnant Water

  2. Tall Grass

  3. Dark Colors

  4. Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

Why do mosquitoes love your backyard? Because you have some combination of those four things. This means that backyard mosquito control isn’t much more complex than reducing or removing those things from your yard.

Step 1: Mosquito-Proof Your Yard by Removing the Standing Water

Mosquitoes breed and lay eggs in standing water. And they don’t need very much of it! They can set up a home in something as small as a bottlecap.

Go through your yard and get rid of all standing water. This might include:

  • Emptying flower pots or bird baths, particularly after rain

  • Covering kiddie pools and draining toys that collect water

  • Ensuring you have holes in your recycling bins

  • Removing for old tires or other clutter

  • Cleaning your gutters. We know… Sorry.

Once you remove these mosquito breeding grounds and hangouts, you should already start noticing a difference.

Step 2: Take Control of Your Lawn and Take Control of Mosquitos

Have you ever noticed yourself getting extra-swarmed by mosquitoes when you mow the lawn? That’s because you’re cutting down their hiding place.

Tall grass provides shade and shelter from the wind for mosquitoes. This means that the longer your grass, the more airborne buzzers are secretly hiding in your lawn.

At the same time, if your soil is compact (or you have any other drainage issues) and water tends to pool on your lawn for a day or two after a rainstorm, mosquitoes are also going to be attracted to that. You may need to aerate your lawn to help it absorb the water properly.

Step 3. Mosquito Proof Yourself

They say that mosquitoes are attracted to colors like:

  • Red

  • Orange

  • Black

  • Cyan (green/blue)

We’re not trying to cramp your fashion sense, but you might want to consider avoiding these colors in the backyard, and also avoid these colors when picking the color of your patio furniture.

Step 4. Reduce the Mosquito Population By Reducing CO2

The biggest sources of CO2 in your backyard are people and your barbecue. That is really bad news for people who like to barbecue.

Of course, we would never say you should stop grilling in your backyard. But try to avoid doing it at peak mosquito hours at dusk on a clear evening. You can also try to position your BBQ in an area of your yard that gets the most wind, which could really help keep the buzzers off you and your guests.
