Buzz Off! Common Backyard Plants That Repel Mosquitoes

Jun 03, 2024

With summer just around the corner, we’re all looking forward to spending some much-needed time outside. Unfortunately, mosquitoes are excited too. Mosquitoes spend the colder months in a kind of hibernation, hunkering down underground, in trees, or in other hidden spots, before re-emerging in the warmer weather. But that doesn’t mean you have to share your backyard space with these pesky pests. Here is a list of common backyard plants that pull double-duty. They’re not just beautiful (and, in some cases, delicious); they also repel mosquitoes naturally!

While basil is tasty and aromatic for us, it’s actually toxic to mosquito larvae. If you plant it near standing water, where mosquitoes tend to lay their eggs, the basil will help destroy that specific life cycle. Plus, you’ll always have basil on hand for cooking and summer cocktails, which you can enjoy in your mosquito-free yard!

Citronella is commonly found in natural mosquito repellents and candles. Citronella masks the smell of the carbon dioxide coming from our breath, which is what lets mosquitoes know humans are nearby. Keep some potted citronella in and around your outdoor seating area so you can breathe easy!

Lavender is known for its soothing, stress relieving properties and pleasant scent. It also drives away mosquitoes and other annoying pests, including moths, flies, spiders, and fleas. Talk about relieving stress!

The marigold is a vibrant, pretty flower with a killer secret ingredient. This plant contains pyrethrum, a compound that is often used in insect repellants, keeping away mosquitoes and lots of other creepy crawlies, while attracting friendly pollinators. They can even deter rabbits from making a meal of your vegetable garden.
