The Mosquito Hero Family Has Curling Olympians and World Champions

Mosquito Heroes and Olympic Heroes

This time of year has us buzzing with pride. We love telling people that we have world champions and Olympic heroes in the Mosquito Hero family!

The husband-and-wife team of Jennifer Jones and Brent Laing has competed on the world's biggest stage as Olympic curlers.

Jennifer:

• Competed in the Olympics in 2022 and 2014, bringing home the gold from Sochi in 2014

• Is a 2-time gold medalist at the World Curling Championships, as well as a 1-time silver medalist, and 1-time bronze medalist in (2018, 2008, 2015, and 2010)

Brent:

• Competed in the 2018 Olympics

• Is a 3-time gold medalist at the World Curling Championships (2007, 2012, and 2016)

They have been proud Mosquito Hero and Weed Man franchise owners since 2024, but their roots in this business go much deeper. 

“Mom and Dad bought the first franchise in Collingwood in 1982. I was born in 1978,” said Laing. “So I don't remember life without the green and yellow [Weed Man] truck in the driveway.”

A Champion’s Mentality

Once their playing days had concluded, entrepreneurship seemed like a logical next step in their journey together. In particular, Laing said that their teamwork-focused mentality has served them well.

“We're just a part of a different team. This is a team that delivers customer service in the lawn care industry, whereas before it was a team that delivered shot-making on the curling ice. It's the same.”

“You plan, you execute, you debrief, and you replan, and you execute, and you debrief. And all the way along, it's not a straight line up. But it's all about getting better at what you do, and being more efficient.”

“And it's a way to keep that competitive fire alive in us, and figure out how we can grow the business,” added Jones.

“We have such a strong relationship, strong friendship, and so much respect for each other that it just seemed natural for us to go into business together and try to use that strength that we have in our relationship to try to be successful in business.”

Team-Focused

This collaborative mentality has fuelled their success in transitioning from Olympians to entrepreneurs. It has also dictated how they have built their own team and recruited new talent. 

“It's just about learning and educating, and then just trying to surround ourselves with the best possible people. And that's what you do in sport. If you surround yourself with like-minded people, you will be successful,” said Jones

“So you want to have a good balance and surround yourself with people that are smarter than you, and you're gonna do great things.”

Outdoor Enthusiasts

When asked about some of their favorite parts of the business, Laing said that he loves helping people spend more time outdoors and enjoy their yards.

“It expands your life, it just brings you so much mental health, physical health, and well-being.”

“If you can go outside and enjoy your yard and have it look beautiful and be pest-free and weed-free, and your kids can run around and play, and really establish that early on in their life, that's how healthy it is to be outside and be active.”
