Bluegrass Billbug

What Is a Bluegrass Billbug?

The bluegrass billbug is a small, black weevil that resides in northern regions of the United States and southern regions of Canada. It is about 1/4 inch long with a long snout or beak, which it uses to feed on the roots, stems, and leaves of grass plants.

The life cycle of a bluegrass billbug goes through several stages, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larvae emerge in August, and the adults survive the winter by living in protected areas, such as gardens. The adult Billbugs emerge early in the spring, and by late June the females begin depositing their eggs in the lawn, which will begin to hatch within a couple of weeks.

Guest or Pest?

Unfortunately, the feeding habits of bluegrass billbugs can cause significant damage to turfgrass and other grassy plants. You may recognize billbug damage by weak roots and irregularly shaped discoloration in your lawn. Lawns that are already thin, dry, or infested with weeds are especially susceptible to insect activity and damage.

The best time to control bluegrass billbugs is when they are very young (in June and July), before you are faced with severe damage. Once the lawn is infested, professional treatment may be necessary to eliminate the problem. When it comes to insect damage, a correct diagnosis is essential. Our friends over at Weed Man can help!
