Are Your Trees Making Your Property More Inviting for Mosquitoes?

May 31, 2024

Mosquito season is officially here, and those pesky blood-suckers are on the prowl, looking for places to feed and breed. The last thing you want is to provide a safe haven for mosquitoes right in your backyard! If you’ve already addressed some of the common causes of mosquito populations, such as standing water and overgrown brush and vegetation, then it might be time to take a look at any trees on your property.

Trees Contribute to Shady, Moist Conditions

Mosquitoes love cool, wet environments. They breed in stagnant, standing freshwater, laying hundreds of eggs at a time. Even small amounts of water can help mosquitoes multiply when left stagnant for at least 4 to 7 days. If your property has a lot of trees, forming a canopy of shade over all or parts of your yard, then you’ll want to pay special attention to these shaded areas, as they might be slow to dry after a rainfall, making the areas susceptible to mosquitoes and other pests. Trees also shield mosquitoes from the elements, like sun and wind, giving them safe places to hide and rest. To reduce your yard’s hospitality to mosquitoes, keep your trees, as well as any bushes and other vegetation, trimmed and neat.

Trees Varieties That Attract Mosquitoes

While all trees have the potential to create shady spaces on your property, there are a few types of trees that are more attractive to mosquitoes than others.

  • Pine trees: Conifers like pine trees can attract mosquitoes, not because of their characteristic scent, but because of the layers of cool, shady shelter between the branches.

  • Flowering Fruit Trees: While female mosquitoes feed on blood, male mosquitoes actually feed on nectar and sap, so they’re attracted to flowering fruit trees that provide this sweet, sticky food source.

  • Dead, Rotting Trees: No matter the tree variety, if you have a dead tree rotting somewhere on your property, it’s going to attract all kinds of pests, including carpenter ants, termites, and, yes, mosquitoes.

If you have a lot of trees on your property, keep them neat and trimmed, pick up any fallen fruit or rotting branches, and talk to your local Mosquito Hero technician about the best mosquito treatment plan for your property.
