Mosquito “Bites” Explained

It’s arguably one of the most dreaded things that comes along with warm weather (and we don’t mean sunburns!) ... those big, red, itchy mosquito bites. But did you know that mosquito bites aren’t actually “bites” at all? Read on to learn more!

Contrary to popular belief, mosquitoes do not “bite” us humans, as they have no teeth to bite us with! Instead, they pierce the skin using a mouthpart called proboscis in order to extract blood from their host. As the mosquito extracts the blood, they inject their saliva into our skin. Our bodies then react to the saliva, and form an itchy, red bump at the extraction site. This is why some people get symptoms of mosquito “bites” more than others – all bodies react differently to mosquito saliva, with symptoms ranging from mild to very strong swelling, soreness, itching, and redness.

How will I know when a mosquito has “bitten” me?

Mosquito “bites” can take various forms. Common signs of a mosquito bite include small blisters; dark spots that are similar in appearance to bruises; a hard, itchy, reddish-brown bump; or perhaps most widely-recognized, a puffy and reddish bump that appears a few minutes after being “bitten.” These bumps can appear to be more severe in adults who have been “bitten” by a mosquito species not previously exposed to, people with immune system disorders, and children.

More severe – but not deadly – reactions include hives, swollen lymph nodes, a fever, or a very large area of swelling.

Although rare, there are cases of people who are severely allergic to mosquito bites. In these cases, a “bite” may result in a potentially life-threatening condition, called anaphylaxis. In these cases, individuals may experience swelling of the throat, intense hives, faintness, or wheezing, after being “bitten” by a mosquito. In short, mosquito bites have the potential to be quite dangerous!
